It was time. It was a horrible situation for a while I thought his statement was very dignified and it was very clear he was proud to manage us. I’m sure he will go and reflect what went wrong and go again. It’s tough as it may well have been the first difficult period he’s gone through as a manager and didn’t have that experience to draw upon his general body language at times looked like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders come the end. He almost was trying to hard I feel at times and you can’t see the wood from the trees and before you know it you’ve lost what was working we have all been there not as a football manager perhaps but in other ways. It’s obvious where our problems stemmed from conceded far to many goals you don’t win games 4/3 every week. I’d love to know the thought process behind things as seems we were always fire fighting in terms of recruitment / back room staff etc.
We are in a precarious position and can not afford to get it wrong here as we enter a tough run of fixtures 3 of which are away. I’m intrigued which route we go down in the next appointment. We have to take stock ourselves as a club look at what is good it’s easy to lose all that in a difficult period as I mentioned earlier in the thread.

I've heard on good authority that Matt Holmes was offered the job & has turned it down. If true then disappointing, I believe he supplemented his income at Wimborne by running football holiday clubs, given we don't run holiday clubs this would have been ideal for him, add to that the rumour of our Academy manager leaving it would have been another opportunity for him. This also makes it sound like Mark Jermyn has said no as he surely would have been first choice? I actually think the managers job is attractive, we have excellent facilities, what is rumoured to be a good playing budget and for a new manager coming in I would say low expectations (escape relegation/mid table finish?).

Been told by a very reliable source that Adam Fricker is close to getting the job I assume that this is a joke - no offence to Mr Fricker but if there's any truth in it, it will show us all exactly where the Board's ambition lies.. Sean

I wonder if Wally Downes would head our way... pretty sure he was good mates with Mark Morris and knew a bit about the club back in the day? I wouldn't put money on it though...

Or perhaps more realistically - what about Ollie Cherrett at Christchurch?

Has been Torquay assistant under Kevin Nicholson who would have been somebody I would liked albeit I would think he would have aspirations to manage higher than ourselves. Not sure where Rob Herrera has gone since il have a look at wiki might give an indication.

Manager in place. Before Tiverton match this Saturday ?

Manager in place. Before Tiverton match this Saturday ? I wouldn't count on it. Yes we have a superb budget for this level, but i think we are as good as down which won't make the role attractive for anyone of any stature. Hence Matt Holmes turning the job down. In reality who can any new manager bring in? I can't see any players leaving Poole, Wimborne, Weymouth or Salisbury for a relegation battle, and an uphill battle at that! Any new manager would be relying on loans and getting players from the leagues below. Loans are great but are kids going to save us when our back are against the wall? I think we need to face up to the fact we have an extremely high chance of being relegated this season. Hire someone within or close to the club until the end of the season and hope a bit of passion can pull us through. In the unlikely event of staying up we bring in someone of stature to start a fresh, and exactly the same in the likely event that we are relegated. Of course, this is all just my opinion but i just can't see anyone of the fans expectations taking the job with the position we are in.

I think the amount of the budget at DTFC is a red herring and to try and measure against other clubs, even the likes of Wimborne/Poole and come to any meaningful conclusion in terms of expected league positions is flawed. The geography of DTFC means that you probably going to pay a 25%+ premium even in normal times to get a player to move from the east of the county and when you look say toward Tiverton or Yate it’s probably more like 50%. You make a very good point about players wanting to leave other clubs and sign up for a relegation battle indeed the type of player that you need will cost far more than the % I mention earlier, that’s if you can even convince them to move, and as for young loan players it’s questionable if their parent clubs would want to risk youngsters not so much in terms of gaining playing experience but it’s probably more about damaging tine self confidence. That said I would be selling the point that an experience battling relegation would prepare the players should such ( which hopefully it never will happen) a relegation battle be faced at their parent club at some point in the future. Stating the very obvious DTFC face a massive uphill task. To a large degree the likely incumbents will not be able to improve the current squad therefore the key issue will be who they can call on to get loan players from.

Whilst agreeing with pretty much all of this, you do sometimes get the phenomenon of new managers bringing quality professionals and friends with them who happen to not be contracted to their current clubs..

This all revises my point that the board left it way too late to dismiss Mr Brooks. Had he gone back in late September/early October when most of us thought was time it would had been early enough in the season to get a little run together, transform our season and possibly even make a play-off push. But instead we are now nearly halfway through the campaign and we are well adrift of safety. Right now we really need a 4 or 5 game winning streak to lift us and given we've only won 3 all season that looks unlikely and will be difficult to attract good players at this stage. Christ, it's even proving difficult to keep hold of our few current remaining good players!
Regarding the new manager, this appointment is so important. It's a shame Matty Holmes doesn't want it, though he's only managed at this level and below it's not nice to hear we've been rejected. The chairman states in today's echo we have 4 in the running who have experience in level 5 & 6, hopefully that's managing at that level. Steve Thompson conference experience but as assistant and was proven during his tenure that he was more of a coach than a manager. I'll be happy with Steve Tully given what he did at Truro but whoever has a big job ahead. I hope they have the patience to get through this campaign first and then hopefully build in the summer.

I wonder if Leigh Robinson has applied? He'd be a useful candidate if he's not up to much at the moment.. Seemed like he formed quite a useful team when at Taunton with Michael Meaker. Didn't entirely work out for them at Truro but they'd fit the bill I reckon...
Who was the keeper we had who was then manager at Weston Super Mare for a while? Perhaps he's in the frame?

Totally forgotten about them, would be more than happy. One thing you could never label at a Taunton side under him was never being organised. The keeper was Ryan Northmore not for me was unreliable by all accounts in terms of turning up as a player rumours of course but stuck with me.

I go back to my point of, will Steve Tully or anyone of credibility take the job knowing that relegation is more than likely!? My suggestion would be to give it to someone already connected or close to the club until the end of the season. That way, whatever division we are in next year, the new manager would have a clean slate & fresh start.

Yes we are in a dire position but survival certainly isn't unachievable. If you're a football manager/coach and you didn't think you were capable of managing a team to stay up with more than half a season remaining then you're probably in the wrong business.

Have you looked at the table & the games that teams above have in hand over us? I guess we shall wait and see, but with the club already failing to secure their first choice manager i think my concerns raise a valid point.

There are, by all accounts, managers with experience of higher leagues, who are keen on the job. I’d much rather depend upon some of their experience over the next months than anybody currently connected to the coaching structure of the club- we surely stand more chance of continuing to fail if we continue to do the same? We don’t know for sure that we’ve missed out on anyone. That’s just forum message exchange & hasn’t been confirmed anywhere official.. Best, Sean
