Taken from yesterday's match programme, I thought this was interesting, not that long ago and some good names. What a player Ugarte was, did he go to Wrexham and score a debut hat-trick?hat happened to Barandiaran?
In 1993 we travelled to Essex to play Chelmsford City and lost 3-0, and two years
later in 1995 we entertained Newport AFC and again lost 3-0, whilst four years down
the line we welcomed Burton Albion to Dorchester, and they travelled home with all
three points courtesy of a 1-0 win, and look where they are now. A year later we
finally won on this date, thanks to a goal scored in a home game against Clevedon
Town by Andy Harris, but six years later we played a goalless draw at Yeading, and
four years on we again drew 0-0, this time at home to Havant & Waterlooville.
However, saving the best till last, I am focusing on our trip to Welling United in 2004,
a game which we won handsomely 4-1, thanks to a Spanish duo, with a hat-trick
scored by Juan Ugarte, on his debut, with the other goal being scored by his fellow
countryman, Joseba Barandiaran.
Ugarte almost opened the scoring in the fourth minute as he darted into the
Welling area, but he was denied by a last minute tackle by Jamie Day. Barandiaran
then went close as he volleyed Anthony Griffin’s cross over the bar.
The opening goal came in the 31st minute, when Alex Browne played a long ball
through to Ugarte, who burst past two static defenders to shoot past keeper Martin
Brennan from the edge of the area. Three minutes later it was 2-0 as Ugarte’s pass
released Barandiaran who rounded Brennan and rolled the ball home.
Barandiaran went close on two further occasions, before the third goal arrived two
minutes before half time, as Browne’s header was blocked on the line, and Ugarte
was on hand to head the loose ball into the net. Ugarte completed his hat-trick
eight minutes after the interval when Barandiaran’s pass split the home defence and
Ugarte provided a clinical finish from the edge of the area.
Ugarte almost made it four, but his shot cleared the bar. Then in the sixty-fifth
minute the home side then sent on Phil Collins, and his introduction livened up the
home side, with the striker heading home Stephen Hughes’ cross within thirty
seconds of his introduction, and he then brought a fine save from Magpies’ keeper
Craig Bradshaw. Hughes was then unfortunate when his header was blocked on the
line. The home side continued to threaten until the final whistle, but a fine display by
Bradshaw denied them any reward.
Magpies’ line up: Craig Bradshaw, Anthony Griffin, Simon Radcliffe, Mark Jermyn,
Alex Browne, Andy Harris, Mark Robinson, Jamie Brown, Juan Ugarte, Matt Groves,
Joseba Barandiaran. Substitutes not used:David Laws, Gary Middleton, Michael
Walker, Carl Poore, Warren Byerley
