Right.. I've had a night's sleep and some breathing space with which to write something about yesterday.
Fred has said elsewhere it was a surreal game and aftermath. I've got to agree. On the pitch, I think the Magpies battled well but the fog made it a guessing game for spectators. Dave Martin alerted us at the final whistle to a press release that was coming out at half 5. All of the directors pretty much kept the news under wraps until then.
Jem was telling the players about the really difficult decision he and Critts had arrived at. When Jem came into the bar, Nathan led a round of applause. Jem got a drink and sat alone. You could see he was fighting against the tears as Kate Taylor and then Derek Taylor had a chat with him.
I don't think any of this is easy for the club Directors. They'd got news this week, in the last few days, about Jem's intentions to stand down. From their perspective, Jem wants to win at everything he does and therefore struggles with the prospect of managing on limited budgets.
Jem said to me that this has come about as a result of a need to reduce the weekly budget by £500. Jem told the board at the start of the season that the budget he was being offered then was One that had seen most teams relegated from our league but that it wouldn't lead to relegation for us. The £500 was a mountain too far. Jem and Critts were not prepared to be seen as integral and involved in something so severe that they'd have to convey and pass on to their colleagues within the team.
Jem clearly loves this club. He doesn't want to see it in the state it is and hopes that by making the decision he has that it'll spark something else to happen. He'll be making a press statement this week but it certainly won't be a bad mouthing thing because he cares too much. He did say this is a supporter led club, not a community club which I found interesting.. And he said he'd come and play for us for nothing if it came to that.. And I very much doubt this is the absolute end of Jem's involvement with Dorchester.
Now is probably not the time for me to speculate on the success or not of the current Board of Directors - but lack of ambition and an over-riding concern to take no risks - has characterised their tenure. I suspect we might see a further relegation now - and some will be happy that expensive coach trips to Kings Lynn are a thing of the past.
