Three changes from last weekend – on-loan trio Griggs, Powell and Mehew in for Dillon, Jerrard and Wood.
Looks like a change of formation, unless Franklyn is at centre back?
Starting XI: 1. Shane Murphy 2. Matt Oldring 3. Jordan Williams 4. Jon Vance 5. Nathan Walker (C) 6. Franklyn Clarke 7. Ollie Bassett 8. Ollie Griggs 9. Lewis Powell 10. Olly Mehew 11. Neil Martin
Subs: 12. Ben Wood 14. Tom Blair 15. Jason Brookes 16. Billy Mitchell 17. Owen Nicolson

This result will come as no surprise to anyone. It's the game against Dunstable where 3 points are an absolute must. A loss against Dunstable and with games against high flying Hitchin and Slough to follow, relegation is looking more and more likely.

Abject. Hopeless. Embarrassing. Last weekend I saw some positives during our defeat to Merthyr but yesterday at Leamington brought it it right back down again. We are a disaster. Leamington carved us apart and if it wasn't for Shane Murphy in goal it could have easily been double figures. You can't blame the players, as many of them just aren't good enough. The manager has come in, and while I respect he's got a building process in place, he's come in and lost 5 from 5 games, the stats don't lie. He's experimenting left right and centre, bringing in players who in time will be good but are not experienced enough for a relegation battle, which we're not only very much in but in very serious danger of actually getting relegated. Oh, and he seems to have lost the dressing room, upsetting a lot of the more senior players with his team selections and bizarre substitutions. It's probably too soon to say the manager is under pressure but with 2 home games coming up (if we lose those, which given current form will happen), you have to wonder if the board have fucked up in appointing this man as relegation simply cannot happen. He's come from a Bridgwater side that picked up just one win all season at that point and has continued his losing record with us. We are the whipping boys in this league now and are on the verge of relegation to a league I don't even know. We look a shambles throughout the playing side of things now and Mr Laird needs to sort this out very very quickly.

Most of your points are fair but your comparing a team who have a very large budget and in a position to attract the top players at this standard, and another club who are probably paying in the region of only a 1k a week to a group of players who will always be in the bottom 6, whoever the manger is. Also I don't understand your point about relegation can't happen. Why not? Stay in this league and every year will be a relegation battle. Drop down a league, regroup, win some games and get some positivity back and look at a top half finish rather than a relegation batle.

I wasn't comparing us to Leamington or anybody, but we have conceded 12 goals in our last 3 away games. I'm fully aware some of these defeats have been against sides at the top, but I shouldn't have to travel all that way to ANY side, watch us get turned over like that and just accept it and be happy with it. It's called having a bit of pride.

The gulf in class is enormous. All you can ask of these players is 100% effort and commitment.

Sounds like the penny is dropping with you, the dressing room has already gone - hence my comment re Dillon that I was castigated for. Laird has been given a 2 year deal because he knows the league below, that is what everyone is preparing for, that is why Jem's gone and that's why all of the current senior players will also soon be gone.

You get used to the lows when you're a DTFC fan but, yesterday was a lurch too great.
The contrast between the effort I saw at Kings Lynn (Jem's last away game) and yesterday was marked. Without doubt, we met a Leamington team firing on all cylinders but we made it easy for them by not even doing the basics right.
Franklyn Clarke is clearly no central defender so why play him there? I think thst's where he was in the first half unless it was some sort of free rein defensive role he was given - at one point, we had three players vying for the left back position leaving Nathan and Shane hideously exposed. God, it was horrible.
One bright spark - Ollie Griggs battled hard in midfield and Ollie Mehew up front made some intelligent runs. Both of these recent signings clearly have ability but are probably too lightweight.
Can't believe people are genuinely suggesting that the league below is a good place to be..

Does seem very strange the new manager is bringing in so many new players. Surely we need a team that is only tweaked not changed completely as we have not got the time/games to mess about trying to find our best team or great players time is running out very quickly. Most of the people watching last season and so far this one knows we desperately need one if not two strikers who can score but all we seem to get is defenders and midfielders in. There is a case for a central defender to come in as back up to Oldring,Walker,Dillon as injuries suspensions will mean them missing games before the end of the season now of course more needed as Dills is out.
Losing Lewis Morgan but gaining Jon Vance seems a straight swap but do we really need all the rest non strikers in as it does not matter if we play lots at the back if we don't score we don't win simple.
Seems like we are bringing in players who are not experienced at this level some it would seem cant get a run in teams when on loan to teams in a league below us, also what is their commitment to the club as many are coming from miles away whilst local players who are just as good certainly no worse (in my view) are not getting a chance but seeing are being told if good enough will be given their chance.
I have to ask why is the Dunstable game a six pointer Dunstable are 15th, 10 points more than us ,i would argue that now every game should be treated as a 6 pointer we have slipped down the table from when we seemed to be safe to a relegation fight but of course as we get towards the end of the season and need the points each game will raise the pressure on the team NOT to lose so will put them under even more pressure if they go behind. I know the Board will say we can only spend what we get so the budget is set by income not debt but now would seem to be the time to take a slight risk and get the money to bring in an experienced striker as if something was to happen to Nathan then we go down full stop as there would not be goals or just importantly his drive to the others when he is on the pitch. If the dressing room has been lost already i would hope that the senior players come out to the board and tell them exactly their concerns so to get it sorted now we have not got time/games to have things simmering away behind the scenes someone needs to grow a pair and get it out between the players/management/board before its too late.
Its not fair to to the manager to have a go at him yet but trouble the facts dont lie . Played 5 lost 5 records at previous clubs seem as bad but we have to trust the board too have got the right man as another Kempy (nice man personally) coming in this late in the season will only get us relegated if we keep on losing as not enough games to mess about . The Board says about the budget that the town will determine the league which we will play in as the support through the gates/sponsor will be the budget, but as we all know the town is not supporting the club, the last 2 midweek games had around 160 through the gates and some saturdays we are down to around 300 unless the away team seem to bring any fans and i believe if we go down then we would lose even more through the gates, Sponsors would be even less likely to come on board meaning even more of a downward spiral. Losing the Weymouth game would certainly be a killer to the budget also it looks like Hereford will be in this league next year even on a midweek night surely their support would beat the combined weekend support of Cambridge,St Neots,St Ives etc combined. Where/how do we get out of this i have no idea and it looks like there are others who dont either for one reason or other. Just my views, no doubt completely wrong but someone who has supported the club for over 40 years and can see another relegation as a long term downward spiral ,

[ Two year deal? Are you sure or have you made that up?![/quote] It was said at the CBS meeting that Laird isn't even getting paid until he's got the squad he want's so i'm pretty sure he isn't on any sort of deal especially a 2 year one.

Wow, things were awful Saturday but you read the comments " better of being relegated" we had this for many a year in the conference south did my head in then. So you think going down is good for this club neutral? Can we meet before the game Saturday? I'd love to know how you think this is a good idea? As we lose the Derby game, Hereford, Sailsbury potentially and a few of the clubs in this league who bring a support. We enter the FA cup and trophy earlier so less chance of lucrative games the list goes on please PM me as I'm receptive to a new way of thinking, as I can't fathom why it's a good idea. This kinda comment is why I fear for community owned clubs with ideas like this your potentially a few votes away from becoming a board member. I shudder at the thought
Southernwatcher, of course the board appointed Laird as he knows the league below, he also knows the league above you have not mentioned this why? Is that because the board wanted promotion and success surely not? Question the appointment of Laird the manager / person but it's a dig at the Board which isn't needed. ask why he impressed them and why they chose to appoint him etc? And the reasons why? By suggesting that your questioning all of there integrity I think.
I aplolgise for calling you out and am no means meant to be hostile and as I said would like to meet Saturday always receptive to a new thought process.
Onto Saturday, we are in deep trouble we all agreed when Laird was appointed just keep us up but we were nearer mid table 10/11 points clear why did we all accept so little? He's dismantled the squad thrown a little niche Jem had how we played keeping it tight granted it was far from perfect but results were improving month on month. He's come in criticised everything and we are now a lot worse off. How naive have his tactics been? He has not learnt either from Chippenham he's done exacly the same and not learnt and stubbornness to change things early when it's clear it's not working. It's not a sign of weakness it means your aware of the game. The leadership from the sideline I questioned it 2 weeks ago and again as the system is not working the body language from the coaching team arms crossed no jeeimg the lads up demand a little more praise when they do well, notice things which you maybe can't on the pitch and suggest. These are young lads he's brought in help them through coach them as much as you can I stood by the dugout v Merthyr and it was the same. His refusal to put our best defensive pairing together Oldering and Walker but no he moves Frankie it was a disaster and obvious from early on watch the highlights it's obvious for all to see did he change it nope. He's made his 8th signing today it's his team now was from week 2/3 in my eyes. Everyone has said he speaks a good game many people do but it has to transfer to the pitch and currently it's not. Oh and the half hearted attempt acknowledging us with his clip board either do it fully or not at all.
On average from his tenure to win a game of football we have to score 4 goals, we had 1 shot on target Saturday so it's impossible to win a game of football going on those stats. Winning football is good football plain and simple and if it means a scrappy 1.0 suits me.
Time to step up its not been good enough starting with back to back home games 4 points from your first 7 games isn't asking a lot anything less and then questions really do need to be asked.

Relating to what Cherry said, Laird strikes me as another Simpkin. Great when we play against sides that "his" tactics can work against, but against anybody else he refuses to change and almost accepts defeat from the off.
I am yet to actually see a game under Laird for various reasons, so I am relying on highlights packages along with comments on here, Twitter and friends who were at the games and I would love for someone to prove me wrong but at the moment it seems like Laird is too stubborn to make any real impact. I think we will stay up, however at this level of football being in a relegation battle is just as harmful, in terms on gate receipts and advertisers, as relegation itself.
Simpkin lost games in the Southern League because he refused to accept he had lost the players upfront needed to play his old long ball style, and during games sat on the bench doing fuck all apart from questionable substitutions late in the game. Seems like Laird is already going this way, which is hard to see as we dont have the time left in the season to hope he breaks his stubbornness in his own time.

I have only mentioned on here what is pertinent - if the board wanted "success", even in a shorter-term guise (i.e Southern Prem status) they would've backed Jem with regards to recruiting a striker as opposed to making his position untenable. Your description of Saturday will have been echoed by many from Yate and Bridgewater btw.

It's no secret that the board wanted to Jem to stay, however Jem refused to work under the budget limitations set by the board as he felt it to be unworkable. I'm sure the board would have loved to back Jem by bringing in a striker, and I suppose you could have helped by finding the magic hat where the money would have come from?

Ok, I think this confused mind needs some help from you folks out there, as in :- a) If a team loses, why is it always the "boards" fault, last time I saw us play I feel sure Dave Ring was not on the field, Dave, if you read this, I used your name at random, though having seen Shaun, Adam & Spracko all try to kick a ball, one would pick you first any day b) The appointment of Mr Laird : on this, I have no views yet as have not seen us play under him, though looking forward to Sat, as at last can get to a match. Saying that, Southernwatcher, you do seem to have a grudge against the man, if you are a long time sufferer of the Magpies, then did you ever post on here under another name, because if not, then where your moans re Simpkin, Kemp or ...Brooks c) The budget excuse? every fan from every club always uses the "budget" as the reason why their team are performing under par. Heck just listen to 606 and you will hear shirtwearers from clubs that have incomes of millions, blaming the lack of investment on the team, even if one player might of cost 90mil So anyhow, yes I presume our budget is low (according to most that post on here, as I have no idea) , yet not that long ago a team won a league with a pittance of a budget, compare to other teams in that same league,so a good team can and will often strive above their status, if all the "factors" gel as one. Guys, It wasn't that long ago I was convinced we would be OK and stay up, however now it is a reality we are entering a very tough couple of months, 5 defeats in 5 is worrying. How about we all put our keyboards down and find a way of travelling to the avenue on Saturday to support and cheer on our obviously lacking in confidence side to give them every chance of kick starting a drive to get out of this hole we are in. I appreciate people live away, but this is realistically the only game winnable in Feb so it's time everyone sticks together and gets down for one game the team and club really do need us more than ever as I'm with the majority a relegation doesn't even warrant thinking about!!!!
Let's start a drive to get half of the supporters from Boxing Day back for this one game!

They front loaded it without any guarantee of cup success. Hence why we are on course to make a slight loss which will be covered by the directors? That's my understanding without being a shareholder it's second hand info. They gave Mark Jermyn a budget to use how he saw fit. Did he use it wisely? As we had no real recognised forward / right back for the majority of the season. A number of questions we all have a view on. Did the board imagine things being different with various things to enable a bigger budget which did not materialise? I'm not privy to such info but purely speculating I don't think I'm far wrong.
