If that's what type of football we have to look forward to next season, think I will find going with the wife shopping more fun.

Can someone who knows the laws of the game better than me explain why it was a penalty and a red card?
To me it seems like an off the ball incident, so no penalty, and it's a trip, not a stamp like the ref implied, so it's only a yellow card?

Defender appears to kick out at attacker inside the area. Very simple. Penalty awarded and red card as ref obviously saw it as violent conduct. Seemed perfectly correct decision.

However the ball is nowhere near the incident, the ball is being played out of the box when the foul is committed. The defender definitely reaches his leg out, but to describe it as a kick seems harsh, it's a trip, so it would warrant a yellow instead of a red.

It's irrelevant that the ball is 5 to 10 yards away from the incident. The referee has deeemed the defender to have kicked out at the attacker inside the penalty area so the simple decision is a penalty kick. Referee was very close to the action so can't argue with his decision in my opinion.

100% penalty all day long. I'm a big fan of Down but that was utterly reckless and unnecessary from the lad off the ball. I'm sure he realises this and will learn from it. Otherwise a very good young centre half, and be great if we could get him in for next season too.
