OK so I only managed to catch the last two pre-season friendlies so I'd thought I'd see what other peoples opinions on performances are.
Against Bideford I wasn't convinced by the performance but there were a couple of performances that showed promise. Evesham however was just desperate & honestly I couldn't really pick anyone out to give anything over 6/10! I have a few issues with the performances I've seen;
1) NO LEADER - As I stated in a previous post I think we are far to quiet on the field. We've been lucky in the last few seasons to have players like Jem and Nathan Walker who were vocal players on the pitch. I've not seen this yet, no one who will grab the team by the balls and drag it kicking and screaming into the game. I think Bowles can do this, just needs to be more vocal.
2) TACTICS - I literally have no idea how we are trying to play and especially after last night (loss to Evesham) I'm not entirely sure the team do. Are we using the wingers and getting crosses into the box? Are playing the ball forward to a big number 9 who holds it up and brings players into the game? Someone described our style to me as school boy football.
3) IGNORING EXPERIENCE - Only one real example of this but last night Chris Weale was screaming at his defence whilst defending a free kick. Of course our non-league 'stars' listened to our league experienced keeper. Yea of course, Chris might be busy this year.
4) YOUTH - Whilst its great to bring young players through the lads we have don't seem to have the strength to hold players off. Hopefully they'll learn and develop but we are going to come up against some physical teams.
Now before everyone says I'm being negative for no reason here are some positives;
1) BILLY LOWES - looks like he is going to be an important player for us.
2) YOUTH - The joys of having some young players is the amount of pace they have, in any league thats an advantage
Please if anyone else has any positives post away! How did we beat Poole? What players are going to be important for us? Am I being too negative after seeing just two games?
