In tonight's Echo, the head line is "We have to stay up this season, that is our goal!" What on earth has happened? Where has the ambition gone? Why isn't our goal promotion? What has changed so much is recent weeks that this is now our goal?

Promotion has never been our goal this season, it has always been a mid-table finish. Given our poor start to the season (albeit with a good showing last night), it is even more evident that our squad is not one that could withstand a season at the top, we need to be realistic and not just say "we want promotion" when it is only numerically possible. Staying up has to be achieved, which is what Critts seems to be trying to get across, not that it is our only goal this season. If the club is relegated it is very difficult to see any return to the National League in the foreseeable future, and would almost end the club as we know it.
To answer your question, what has changed in recent weeks is that the quality of our squad vs the league has sunk in to everybody's heads and the ambition has not gone, it has just been realised that we have other priorities before being able to push for promotion.

There's a big difference between "hopes and dreams" and "ambition." Every supporter would hope that the club could be challenging for promotion, but the ambition has to be realistic to the quality of the current squad. This specific squad will bottom half of the table at very best but highly probable to be battling relegation. The budget is clearly at the lower end of the league and the standard of player reflects this. If money is not available to enhance the squad, then very little can be done to change the current situation. Team spirit, and hard work will only get the team so far in this league , and without an injection of substantial investment, this is in my opinion will be another season of struggles.

Back in August, it was obvious that this group of players would be fighting relegation. If the club is being run like a business, with none or very little money being invested into the playing side, what are the chances of the club even surviving in a lower division IF relegation were to happen on Saturday? What is the business plan or strategy of the board if the club were to lose its southern league status? If it is the same as has been witnessed this year, then surely there is no hope of even staying up in a lower division. It maybe a subject which might upset the blinkered few, but it's a realistic debate which could soon become reality.
