It seems looking at social media this morning that Merthyr have withdrawn from the league for this season. On Poole's website (official) someone posted FA Cup away Tuesday at Merthyr off Poole get a bye. Nothing official on Merthyr page yet.

Hi Phil, I see that Mertha has gone into lockdown, so suspect this could be a reason

As I understand it there are different rules in Wales and the Welsh assembly do not allow fans to attend matches at our level. They cannot continue this season without match day income.

Now official so down to 20 clubs for this season. Poole get a bye and are through to the next round of the FA cup and Merthyr will be allowed back into the league at the same level next season.

Before I start I’ve nothing but respect for Merthyr as a football club one of the first fixtures I look for is when we play them home / away as they are a good bunch. However how does this work with little to no repercussions? Why should a club in theory play all games and be relegated yet a club who cannot fulfill fixtures be allowed to stay up? All clubs are counting the cost of this period they are not the only ones. This precedent is worrying this isn’t because I think we as a club will be down there I don’t look at a previous thread. It’s about sporting fair play.

The National Game Board have stated that no club should be penalised because of the pandemic. Merthyr are in the unique position of being the only club out of the 88 at step 3 not being allowed to have fans attend home games. It seems unlikely that the blanket ban on fans attending matches in Wales will be lifted anytime soon.

Tad harsh Steve considering we only stayed up because of Covid19 The situations are not comparable. As I’ve said previous I’ve nothing against Merthyr as a football club quite the opposite. How can a club play all league games get relegated while a club who plays zero is guaranteed survival. If we get 10 games in using Wimborne purely as an example as they are bottom could be anybody there 10 games in lost the lot realise they are going to go down do they do the same? And then it repeats and repeats.

Than again, as Phil says, have they been mothballed or are the going under, I presume the club still has to honour contracts etc?
Personally I think that if Covid19 infection rates and sadly deaths get out of hand then all footy at our standard will shut down again, obviously I really hope we never get to that stage
Going back to Merthyr, if they are still around by the end of the season then who's to say the league will not again suspend all relegation and promotions as just this one club, at the moment, has already created a new can of worms
Keep safe and well

As Cherry says nothing against the club but surely opening a can of worms. Merthyr being in Wales currently have different Covid regulations than here in England, so one club ruled by Wales the rest by English Government yet supposed to be on same rules to play in the same league. Unless the league now drops relegation can see a big problem at the end of the season if it finishes. Simply because every team that plays this season has to play within Covid rules/regulations with associated costs, less income etc yet still fulfill their obligations knowing they could be relegated yet a team who didn't play stay in the league. Surely Merthyr knew 7/10 days ago that they couldn't play the season so why not inform the league back then possibly the league could then video conference the other 87 clubs as to what option to take before the season started

The league stated that the season would not start without fans being able to attend matches. Merthyr have to follow the rules of the Welsh assembly which differ from those of the Westminster government. This scenario was always possible and did not just happen over the weekend but a decision had to be made before Merthyr played their first match.
If the Westminster government were to change it's approach and fans in England were not allowed to attend matches for the foreseeable future at our level then I think you will find that the league season will again be null and void. Clubs at our level just cannot survive playing without paying fans.
Not for me to make a judgement but it does seem a bit wierd that Merthyr can still run all their hospitality events (live sport in the lounge, Sunday lunch etc) and all the events on their 3g pitch but not be allowed fans at first team games!
